Build Something You're Proud Of

Updated: Jul 26, 2020

When thinking about the nativity, a fact not everyone knows is that Joseph was a carpenter. He made a living building and fixing for others and although he couldn’t build Mary a shelter right when one was needed, his ability to erect or repair was his way of life. He didn’t come from much, and he was a humble man of few words. But he played an important behind-the scenes role in the birth and life of Jesus.

I would almost venture to call Joseph a ‘supporting actor’ in the nativity. While important and present throughout, he has very few ‘speaking parts’ that brought him to the forefront of the event. Because of this, it’s not uncommon for people to forget that Joseph was involved in the story altogether. However, we must remember everything he did up to that point is really what should be admired most.

Before Jesus was born, Joseph was just a regular, everyday carpenter. While it was nothing fancy, he was able to use his ability to build objects to build a life. The life he built was something he could be proud of and was something that could help support Mary and eventually their special baby boy.

What are you building for yourself and others?

Christmastime seamlessly segways into the new year. During the holidays, we are often preoccupied with tallying what we can do for others. While that’s important, it’s during this critical time that we should also be concerned with what we are building for ourselves. What crucial decisions should you be making right now to set you on the right path for the future? Where can you make positive changes in your life? Is there any sector of your life that needs additions or improvements?

That’s not all to say that we don’t need to be thinking of others, too. Are the steps your taking today going to benefit the people who matter most? Are there hidden, negative consequences of what you are doing right now? What do your people need and how are you going to deliver a solution? The secure foundation that Joseph built for Jesus helped him to grow into who he needed to be during his time on earth

Just as Joseph built things in his life, I invite you to reflect this season on what you can build in your own life. Maybe it’s a more rigid routine, a more welcoming environment for friends, or a stronger connection with your family. Whatever you build, I can guarantee it will almost always have an equally as positive reaction on someone else.
